Description

The 2026 Kawasaki KLX230 Sherpa S ABS is basically a new adventure/trekking-focused version of the KLX230 S, not a full redesign of the engine platform. Kawasaki added a bunch of practical dual-sport features and changed the ergonomics to make it more approachable and trail-friendly.

Here are the main changes and differences versus the regular 2026 KLX230 S:

What’s new on the Sherpa S
  • Lower seat height: 32.5 in

    • The regular KLX230 S is about 33.3 in

    • Easier for shorter riders and technical slow-speed riding.

  • Shorter suspension travel

    • Front: 6.2 in

    • Rear: 6.6 in

    • This lowers the bike but also reduces aggressive off-road capability compared to the standard S.

  • Lower ground clearance

    • Sherpa S: 8.5 in

    • Standard KLX230 S: 9.4 in

  • Adventure-style equipment added from factory:

    • Aluminum skid plate

    • Hand guards

    • New blockier rally/adventure styling

    • Different side panels and headlight cowl.

  • Selectable ABS

    • Rear ABS can be disabled for dirt riding.

  • Smartphone connectivity

    • RIDEOLOGY app support added to the digital dash.

What stayed the same

The core bike is still the familiar KLX230:

  • 233cc air-cooled SOHC single

  • 6-speed transmission

  • Steel perimeter frame

  • 21/18 wheels

  • About 17 hp / 14 lb-ft torque.

Weight and price
  • Wet weight: about 300 lb

  • MSRP: about $6749 before fees.

Overall idea of the Sherpa

The Sherpa S is aimed more at:

  • gravel roads

  • camping trips

  • light adventure riding

  • beginners/intermediate riders

  • shorter riders wanting confidence off-road

It’s less of a “hard trail” bike than the taller KLX230 variants, but more comfortable and approachable for mixed riding.  Owners describe it as a simple, nimble “go anywhere” bike with softer suspension and very manageable handling.
